CHERI TATEM-HALE, exercise physiologist, has recently returned to her business of 15 years, Strength Insight, empowering clients in the Boulder area to maintain and create quality of life, through exercise. She has come back from almost two years in London, UK, where she worked in an acute neurological rehab unit at one of the country’s leading private hospitals. Cheri works exclusively with clients who are affected by chronic or long-term medical conditions, disability and other complex and multiple needs. Her expertise falls in the gap which still exists between the territories of physical therapy, conventional medicine, the work of fitness professionals and holistic therapies. Her work is clinically based, but addresses long-term well-being and quality of life, which can have different meanings for different individuals. Strength Insight combines many tools including strength training, neurological work and hydrotherapy.
Cheri’s referrals come from physicians, therapists and disability advocacy groups and in turn she helps her clients build their own care-teams. Her academic background is in physiology and psychology and she has been practicing for over 25 years, beginning her professional life in cardiac rehabilitation. She contributes to further education curricula and provides training and mentoring services for other therapists, fitness professionals and carers and speaks publicly as an expert on the emerging field of medically based fitness, including on the need for educational standards.
Cheri’s passion is in making mainstream fitness facilities inclusive to all and breaking down barriers which prevent many of her clients from working outside their homes or specialist facilities. The individuals she works with are affected by a wide range of conditions or disabilities, some of which are visible and some of which are not; what they have in common is the belief that conventional medical or fitness practices do not address their needs comprehensively. Cheri is also a philanthropist and social entrepreneur raising funds and awareness and delivering community programmes for disability and medical causes both locally and internationally.
